Ogburn
Avenue
Words and music by Kenny Shore
I was a child in this neighborhood
I left town as soon as I could
Sometimes you have to go back again
And sort through memories of where you've been
I went down Ogburn Avenue
I hardly recognized the view
Everything looked a little small
So many memories I couldn't count them all
I lived across from my junior high
Walked to school and gave it my best try
There stands my house, where every Sunday night
My mom served pound cake and I ate every bite
I was standing on that porch when my brother said
"Did you hear that President John is dead?"
I didn't believe him 'cause I liked his smile
I didn't know why, I was just a child
We watched Ed Sullivan bring on a band
With bushy hair sing "I wanna hold your hand"
So this is the place I started growing up
Ate that little wafer and drank from that cup
Listened to my Daddy preach about Calvary
Heard Doctor King talk about being free
And every night before I went to bed
I prayed that no more soldiers would be dead
I went down Ogburn Avenue
I hardly recognized the view
Everything changes by degrees
But all those years came back to me
Yeah, all those years were staring at me
Everything that I've said and done
Is based upon where I came from
Everything looked smaller than before
I guess I'm not a child anymore
I went down Ogburn Avenue
I hardly recognized the view
